Value engineering is a systematic method to improve the "value" of goods or products and services by using an examination of function. Value, as defined, is the ratio of function to cost. In maintenance, value engineering can be applied to optimize maintenance processes and equipment choices, ensuring that maintenance activities provide the greatest value in terms of reliability and performance improvement relative to their cost.
